How does a crowdsourced, air-quality sensor network work?
Communities can enhance their understanding of air quality by deploying spatially dense sensor networks, where community members host sensor nodes, provide power, and connectivity (often WiFi). These nodes transmit measurements to a cloud database for quality assurance and visualization on maps. With enough sensors, integrated measurements offer valuable insights despite some data imperfections. While each node may monitor multiple pollutants, particle pollution is a common indicator, offering reliable estimates of air quality with proper quality control. Costs for sensor nodes vary depending on the pollutants measured, ranging from hundreds to a few thousand dollars.
How do we calibrate our data?
We conduct multi-variable regional calibrations for all PM sensors by utilizing ground-truth data obtained from local Federal Equivalent Method (FEM) or Federal Reference Method (FRM) sources. FEMs/FRMs are top-tier monitoring instruments, often maintained by the EPA, known for producing dependable hourly PM concentration measurements. Our process involves collecting data from these esteemed sources and comparing it to readings from nearby low-cost monitors to ensure precise, current calibrations directly traceable to these reliable benchmarks. These calibrations are regularly reviewed and updated to reflect the latest environmental conditions of the region.
